Combined with the ease-of-use of a pre-packaged cartridge, ExtendAir cartridge technology is the choice for CO2 scrubbing in a closed circuit rebreather. Based on tests performed in NOAA test chambers, ExtendAir CO2 cartridges will last 2 to 4 times longer than an equivalent volume granular canister. That is 30-percent more CO2 scrubbed by weight than granular. Recommended scrubber duration for sport diving depths is 240 liters of CO2, which is conservatively three hours in warm water and two hours in cold water (actual CO2 production of every individual varies). Rebreather manufacturers have worked with granular adsorbents for years and know the strengths and weaknesses of that technology. Granular scrubber is often limited by channeling of gases through the absorbent bed, duration variability due to individual differences in diver filling technique, dusting from routine handling, and settling in storage and shipping. This tool allows a diver to connect a second stage into the manual addition oxygen hose for emergency, open-circuit decompression use (in case of total loop failure).
